Gigi Hadid Turns Her Body Into a Canvas in Miu Miu at the 2026 Met Gala

Ascending the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2026 Met Gala, Gigi Hadid delivered a masterclass in subverting red-carpet transparency under the evening’s “Costume Art” theme and “Fashion is Art” dress code. Stepping away from traditional opaque gowns, Hadid turned her own form into the primary artistic medium in a custom Miu Miu ensemble that synthesized archival references with raw immediacy. Collaborating closely with stylist Jason Bolden and Miuccia Prada’s design atelier, the gown fused the diaphanous, sheer base of Miu Miu’s Spring 1998 collection with kinetic flame and floral patchwork embroidery drawn from Spring 2011. Supported by makeup artist Patrick Ta, hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, and nail artist Mei Kawajiri, the look rejected concealment in favor of calculated, sculptural self-expression.

“We all sat in a hotel room two days ago, literally, and Scotch-taped the patches onto me in a way that felt celebratory. It’s built on the body. The body is the canvas.”

The garment’s construction process mirrors the spontaneous ethos of haute-couture drapery. When initial fitting sketches failed to articulate the contours of her body with the desired kinetic tension, Hadid and the design team pivoted just forty-eight hours before arrival. Using translucent silk tulle as a pristine veil, flame-shaped patches were taped directly to her skin, creating an organic map that honored anatomy over standard pattern-cutting. Intentionally visible cheeky undergarments anchored the ethereal transparency, establishing formal underwear as a central, deliberate design focal point rather than an afterthought.

On the beauty front, Hadid embraced an understated, ethereal palette she coined “a romance night in the garden.” Foregoing heavy graphic eyeliner, Ta sculpted the cheekbones with a flush of Maybelline New York Cloudtopia Cheek & Lip Mousse Blush, paired with a soft mauve lip that reinforced the dewy, skin-forward narrative. Giannetos complemented the fluid silhouette with voluminous honey-blonde waves falling in loose, tactile ripples down her back, while Kawajiri polished the look with a minimalist, high-gloss nude manicure that subtly echoed the sheen of the sheer mesh. Accessorized with over thirty-three carats of Georgian cut-down diamond jewelry from Jessica McCormack—including asymmetric emerald-cut diamond hoops set in blackened gold—the overall aesthetic maintained an arresting balance between 1990s archival minimalism and tactile red-carpet irreverence.

The low-scooped backline—left entirely bare save for a trail of crystal beading—proved equally magnetic from behind, a detail Bolden and Miuccia’s atelier left deliberately unobstructed to let the gown’s architecture speak for itself.

Key Fashion Takeaways

  • The Body as Canvas: By merging the translucent silk base of Miu Miu’s Spring 1998 archive with archival Spring 2011 flame embroidery, Hadid treated her skin as the foundational textile, transforming classic red-carpet illusion dressing into literal body-contouring art.

  • Formal Underwear as Outerwear: Rather than deploying seamless, invisible shapewear, the look deliberately featured visible satin undergarments beneath sheer crystal-dusted mesh, flipping traditional modesty codes into an intentional, graphic styling anchor.
  • Organic 48-Hour Draping: In an era dominated by rigid algorithmic tailoring, constructing and taping embroidery patches directly onto the body two days prior to the event reclaims the spontaneity of couture modeling.
  • Atmospheric “Moonlit Garden” Beauty: Rejecting heavy eyeliner and stark contouring, the luminous, softly flushed complexion and brushed-out blonde waves allowed the tactile details of the dress and the antique-cut Jessica McCormack diamonds to hold focus without distraction.
